Winterthur/AXA Painting Contest

In 1996, the Winterthur Foundation and the cathedral chapter organized the first edition of the rapid painting contest to promote new talents and raise funds for the restoration of the cathedral. Since then, it has been held every year with a progressive increase in participants.
The contest takes place over one day, in July, and the winning and selected works are exhibited at the Casa del Cordón in Burgos during September and October, where they can be purchased by individuals.

Transmission Regiment number 22
Since 1996, the cathedral has hosted (except in 2013) the Nativity scene presented by the transmission regiment of the army, based in Burgos, to its fellow citizens. Over the years, it has grown to become the largest monumental Nativity scene in the country.

The Barrie Foundation presented a traveling exhibition to show the cleaning and restoration processes being carried out on the Portico of Glory of the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. In January, it could be seen in the Valentín Palencia room of the Burgos cathedral.

Series of exhibitions where current artistic languages were communicated in the Gothic space of the cathedral.
In that year, this exhibition cycle, which had been held in the lower cloister during the summer months since 2005, was closed. After more than 700,000 total visits and the participation of 11 artists of recognized prestige, the project '21st Century. Art in the Cathedral' closed its experience with a retrospective of the six exhibitions.
El Greco in Burgos Cathedral

Unlike previous years, where two artists shared and communicated their work, this time it was only Jorge Pardo who presented his works. The Cuban artist symbolized the alliance between clarity and light inside and closure and darkness outside. A strong counterbalance between his works and the spaces that housed them.

In the garden of the courtyard, the bells that Jorge Perez arranged along the outer walls of the cloister recalled the sound of prayers, the sounds of the religious. The title was clear. Bernardí Roig presented his white human figures in the courtyard garden. Representing light in man and, in a sense, paradise. Marina Nuñez transfigured the interior space into darkness and a neo-hell.

In this 3rd edition, two seemingly distant working methods were combined. On the one hand, the classic treatment of figurative wood sculpture by the German Balkenhol, and on the other hand, the digital work on large-format photographs carried out by José Manuel Ballester.

The recently reopened lower cloister hosted this intense exhibition on the figure of Rodrigo Diaz, El Cid. It emphasized the text of the Poema del Mío Cid as the first known work written properly in Castilian language.

The 2nd edition featured glass and metal. The reinterpretation of the Gothic stained glass windows by Gerardo Rueda and the metal crosses by Chirino, distributed the spaces of the lower cloister, its garden, and the Valentín Palencia hall.

Later known as "Contemporary Iconographies", this exhibition launched the project '21st Century. Art in the Cathedral'. In it, artists Carmen Calvo and Miquel Navarro created, among other works, two large contemporary altarpieces that concentrated the communicative sense between current art and Gothic art, which this project aimed to achieve.
